Amanda Brugel
Pointe Claire, a quiet neighborhood situated in the West Island of Montreal is something you could call a "sleepy" place. The West Island, to those not familiar with it, is a vast part that stretches from Lachine until the west. Amanda Brugel is said to be born on the West Island. However, it's not the case. Brugel grew in Courtice close to Oshawa. Her early ambition was to become a dancer, but a growth spurt led to her growing beyond her dance partner. In an article from The Toronto Star she admitted In heels, I'm 6'1 inch. When I outgrew my male partners I stopped. Many former dancers turn to acting and in the case of Brugel, it was the result of a recommendation from her teacher of drama. She was recommended by a teacher getting a part in the school's annual production. She auditioned and was cast in the role of Anne of Green Gables. The show was granted the Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to take part in York University's Theater Program, where she graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts. Brugel's career spans over 20 years and she's been in over 60 productions, both on big screens and smaller ones. Her most recognizable role was as Rita (pictured below) in the television show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel, the only Canadian of the season 1 actors of the series and only seen occasionally was the sole Canadian.
